The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and view Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but inside Together lies a intense meditation about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together is the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It stars Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when the couple move from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A commonly used narrative setup, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes conclude. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While walking near their country house, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence begins influencing the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, blending bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and authentically humorous exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He fears the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he can’t drive and relies on Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple face the type of challenges that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, a few pairs having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could potentially serve as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply look at your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on Hulu now.
