Conservative responses to the limited release of files related to the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in American the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the censorship process.
Questions Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and image appear in portions of the documents, the widespread black blocks raise significant questions about what may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for greater openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” posted Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he continued.
Some Conservative Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
But, some conservative pundits and Trump allies came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—from a justice department run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
But a few are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to launch the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed Donald Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Former President Campaign Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of zero illegal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House hasn’t been concealing these files for months only to release them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” his representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Conservative Commentary Remains Subdued
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the legislative vote to pass a law requiring the documents' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete release. In February, she chastised the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a group of conservative influencers were provided physical binders of materials that included no previously unseen data.
